Water Works

Water exercise is highly recommended for people with arthritis. Swimming is an excellent exercise as the force of gravity is greatly reduced in the water. Water provides buoyancy and support for joints and body weight and therefore allows an individual to move the painful joints more easily. Swimming can improve muscle tone and movement of large joints better than any other activity.

Water Works™

Water Works™ is a recreational program developed by The Arthritis Society and provided in a local community pool (preferably a pool which is heated to 90 degrees F.). The program focuses on range of motion exercises and strengthening exercises because the water also provides some resistance depending on the speed of movement. If you already are involved in regular physical activities, Water Works™ Plus is the advanced version of this program.
Before embarking on any exercise program, check with your doctor and alert your instructor that you have arthritis.
